Inspired by Temple Grandin’s Hug Machine
The Sensory Comfort Roller is based on the pioneering work of Temple Grandin, an autistic researcher and advocate who designed the original Hug Machine to help individuals manage sensory overload. Grandin discovered that deep pressure stimulation could produce a calming effect, improving self-regulation and reducing anxiety. This concept has been integrated into the Sensory Pressure Roller, bringing her insights to life in a practical and accessible way.
Many children with autism spectrum disorder and other conditions experience sensory processing issues.
Sensory processing is the ability to both interpret and organise information that is received through the senses. Parents and caregivers can assist by incorporating calming and organising activities throughout the day and by making adaptations to the environment.
Children may have difficulties processing tactile sensory information, such as light touch and pressure, causing unsettled behaviour, discomfort and distraction.
Sensory Pressure Rollers or Steamrollers, as they might be called, can provide deep pressure feedback and are based on the hug machine design by Temple Grandin. The user may roll back and forth once in the rollers, or roll straight through. This product should always be used under supervision.
